Since its inception in 2006, the goal of the National Life Group Foundation is to do good in the communities in which we live and work by supporting nonprofit and educational organizations. We do this in a number of ways, including providing grants through our Foundation, giving our employees 40 hours of paid volunteer time annually, sponsoring events, and offering in-kind donations.
The Foundation’s annual budget is $1,000,000; while this is substantial, there is a lot of need in our communities so our giving is focused. Our grants vary in size and we rarely fund an entire program.
We look for proposals that have:
We don’t fund new programs. We focus on proven programs with metrics to support success. We also favor programs that focus on children and families but we also consider those in health and human services, the environment, education, and the arts and recreation. The vast majority of our funding is centered on central and northern Vermont and the Dallas, Texas, area where our employees live and work.
We don’t make grants for endowments, scholarships, higher educational institutions (with the exception of our employee matching program), religious organizations, labor and fraternal groups, debt reduction or work that has already been completed. Additionally, we don’t make grants to individuals, daycare facilities, or school trips. Finally we don’t make grants to organizations that discriminate in any way on the basis of race, religion, gender, age, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation.
To be considered for a grant, an organization must be a public charity which is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Our grant enrollment period is from January 1st to March 31st. Your application and supporting documentation must be submitted within that time frame for us to consider your request. Decisions will be communicated by May 31st. If your grant is approved, checks will be sent by June 30th.
