An Indexed Universal Life (IUL) insurance policy is usually a fixed universal life (UL) policy where interest is determined by the performance of a specified market index. IUL policies do not directly participate in any stock or equity investments. All indices are unmanaged and you cannot invest directly in any market index. Diversification does not assure a profit or protect against a loss in declining markets.
The use of cash value life insurance to meet accumulation goals assumes that there is first a need for life insurance. The ability of a life insurance contract to accumulate sufficient cash value to help meet accumulation goals will be dependent upon the amount of extra premium paid into the policy, and the performance of the policy, and is not guaranteed. Policy loans and withdrawals reduce the policy’s cash value and/or death benefit, loans will become taxable if the policy lapses or is surrendered, and if too much is taken out, you risk lapsing the policy. Surrender charges may reduce the policy's cash value in early years. While the potential to grow cash value and the 0% floor protects against negative index returns, it does not prevent policy and applicable rider charges, expenses, and fees from being deducted. These ongoing costs will be deducted from the cash value regardless of whether interest is credited.
