National Life Group Recognizes John Holzscheiter with Agent Do Good Award for Suicide Prevention and Awareness

MONTPELIER, Vt. - (April 15, 2026) John Holzcheiter of The Vermont Agency recently received the National Life Group Agent Do Good Award for his efforts through his nonprofit, the Afterglow Foundation, Inc. The Foundation’s main mission is teaching parents how to talk to their kids about suicide.

Holzscheiter founded Afterglow after his son, AJ, died by suicide at the age of 18. Since this tragedy, John and his family have been dedicated to making sure anyone struggling with thoughts of suicide is able to embrace the fact that there is no shame in asking for help, to have hope and know there are people in the community that can help.

The Afterglow Foundation hosts an annual music festival in St. Albans, Vermont, donating the proceeds to various suicide prevention organizations that focus on youth support. Since 2019, the Foundation has donated over $500,000 to Northwestern Counseling & Support Services, The Vermont Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Josh’s House, Spectrum Youth & Family Services, Howard Center, and The St. Albans Recreational Department.

Hannah Hubscher nominated Holzscheiter for the Agent Do Good Award. Hubscher has known him for two years and has seen the dedication put into the Afterglow Foundation and honoring AJ.

“I've never met someone so passionate about helping others,” said Hubscher. “His excitement, commitment, and warmth are so powerful when you are in his presence. Everything he does is in memory of AJ, and the amount he has accomplished in such little time is truly remarkable.”

Holzscheiter received $7,500 from National Life for his Foundation.
