Any successful company is affected by the times in which it operates. Our corporate history is directly tied to all of the major events in America since 1850. We had insured customers and employees fighting in the Civil War, running west in the Gold Rush, going down on the Titanic, wallowing in the mud of World War I trenches, dying from the Spanish Influenza epidemic, and fighting in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The Depression impacted the company during crucial growth years. Various government investigations and subsequent legislation shook the industry, but National Life continued to grow and strengthen during it all. The massive Flood of 1927 wiped out most of the corporate archives but the Flood of 1992 saw the company giving away $1,000 "jump start" grants to local residents and businesses simply for the asking. As with so many others, we watched the events of September 11, 2001 and were worried for the many agents and customers of ours that worked in or otherwise frequented the World Trade Center. |
