ROBERT W. WHITNEYlayout spacer
Robert W. Whitney was the chief artist for the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid. Four years later, he was the chief artist for the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans.

Whitney was commissioned to create four original works of art to grace the covers of National Life's 1980 to 1984 annual reports. His task was to depict four Vermont scenes showing the seasons of the year.

The first watercolor in the series was entitled "Cross-Country" and shows two cross-country skiers. The female image was modeled after Whitney's wife, who was an Olympic skater.

The spring image was a fisherman underneath a traditional Vermont covered bridge and was entitled "Saturday Morning."
"Haying Time" showed the traditional methods of haying prior to full mechanization on Vermont farms.
The final image in the series showed the bright colors of Vermont foliage during fall. Whitney called this watercolor "Autumn Stroll."
