MacLeay Honored with Two Distinct Awards
(October 11, 2006) Montpelier, VT - National Life Group’s Chairman, President and
Chief Executive Officer Tom MacLeay was honored with the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award by the Green
Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts, as well as the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award at an award ceremony
held in Montpelier.
MacLeay was honored for his outstanding commitment to his community and the State of Vermont. In
receiving the Citizen of the Year Award, MacLeay joins a distinguished few, including former Governor and National Life Board of
Directors’ Chairman Deane C. Davis.
In being named National Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Eagle Scout – a honor only awarded to Eagle Scouts
for their distinguished profession and commitment to community for at least 25 years after earning Eagle Scout Rank – MacLeay joins
an equally eminent roster of past recipients, including former astronauts Neil Armstrong, James Lovell and Charles Brady, William
Gates, former President Gerald Ford, former Senator John Glenn and a host of others. Less than 2000 Eagle Scouts have received this
honor and MacLeay represents the first in the State of Vermont.
David Coates, Lead Director for the National Life Board of Directors was the master of ceremonies and Governor
Jim Douglas was on hand to congratulate MacLeay. “One of the most distinguishing things about Tom MacLeay, all of his honors and
accomplishments notwithstanding, is that he doesn’t take too much of all that too seriously. He’s down to earth, straight forward, and
sometimes even humble,” said Governor Douglas. “He is a good scout, but above that I suspect the reason that many of you are here to honor
him this evening is because he’s a good man."
Vice President – Communications Brian Vachon spoke about MacLeay, their friendship and their working relationship. Brian
then introduced two special guest speakers, Kate MacLeay Crespo and David MacLeay, MacLeay’s children. Both spoke with great admiration of their
father and his achievements.
