Information for National Life Group Policyholders
In Areas Impacted by the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
(September 12, 2005) The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina has directly
affected several thousand National Life Group (National Life Insurance Company and Life Insurance
Company of the Southwest) policyowners. Several zip code regions in Louisiana, Mississippi and
Alabama are currently unable to receive mail. These regions may be found on the listing
of "closed" post offices on the website of the United States Post Office. The mail rooms at
National Life and LSW have been monitoring this list closely and are holding all mail that would
be sent through these post offices. As the offices are re-opened, mail will be released.
Affected states are in the process of enacting emergency regulations to help
protect customers from having their insurance coverage unintentionally lapse. In Mississippi and
Alabama, the company is currently operating under a 60 day extension (as of August 26) of grace periods.
In Louisiana, it is expected that the extension will last at least 120 days. These time frames may be
adjusted at a later date based on feedback received from the State Departments of Insurance. Unless
other information is received from a policyowner, premium notices will continue to be mailed
(where possible) and Check-O-Matic arrangements will remain in-force. However, policies will not lapse
for lack of premium payment. Any pending lapse notices will be held and mailed after the grace periods
have ended.
National Life will continue to provide customers with information as it becomes
available. In the meantime, customers can contact National Life's Customer Relations Department at
800-732-8939 with any questions.
