National Life Group (NLGroup) Employees Green Up Montpelier
Employees of National Life Group cleaned up the streets and river banks of
Montpelier in a time-honored community service last Friday.
Vermont's official Green Up Day was Saturday, May 3, but National Life Group
employees got an early start on this longstanding tradition Friday, May 2. Nearly 50 volunteers donned
green tee shirts and gloves and set out to collect trash throughout downtown Montpelier.
Staff members from the Montpelier Downtown Community Association were on hand to
direct groups and help with the effort. Volunteers separated into small groups, each with a specific
area to cover. In keeping with National Life's green initiative, volunteers packed onto Capital Shuttle
buses to reach their assigned clean-up areas.
Overall, employees collected about 40 bags of garbage. Green Up Day has been a
Vermont tradition for 38 years. Martha Trombley Oakes, National Life Group's Director of Corporate
and Community Relations, said "All the participants in Friday's event noted a big difference in the
areas they cleaned and commented on how much more we could have done with more time and volunteers."
She thanked everyone who participated and said the company hopes to make Green Up Day a new employee
community service tradition.
