National Life CEO Tom MacLeay, a member of the Roundtable, said that Coates was a deserving recipient of the prestigious honor. Noting that the award presentation described Coates
as “a man of integrity, honesty, and quiet diplomacy,” MacLeay said, “That is a wonderful and accurate description of David, and it reflects the incredible strength of character that he brings to every
task he undertakes and every person he touches.”
Coates, elected to the National Life Board in 1993, had a distinguished career in public accounting that began in 1962 with P.F. Jurgs and ended with his 1993 retirement from KPMG as
a managing partner. He has continued to be active in business, serving most recently in several executive posts at the New England Culinary Institute. Coates has served as a close adviser to a number
of governors of both parties and is a member of the Governor's Council of Economic Advisors.
Coates has received numerous honors throughout his career, including being named Vermont's 2003 Citizen of the Year by the state Chamber of Commerce.
Created in 1987 as a nonprofit, public interest organization, the Vermont Business Roundtable has dedicated itself to thoughtful, deliberative, and well-documented analyses of
significant public policy issues affecting all Vermonters, ranging from education, economic health, environmental quality, health care policy, and technology.
